El día en que canté el ‘Cara al sol’ por Luis Landero

En la madrugada del 27 de septiembre ejecutaron a tres miembros del FRAP y a dos de ETA. El 1 de octubre, Franco convocó a las masas por última vez en la plaza de Oriente, y creo que esa misma mañana asesinaron en Madrid a tres policías. Dos o tres días más tarde, me recuerdo caminando por un Madrid luminoso y casi desierto por la festividad y por el miedo. Me parece que en esas fechas habían cerrado Triunfo, que es la revista que yo leía puntualmente entonces. Ahora mismo se me viene a la memoria que unos meses antes Fraga había dicho desde Londres algo así como que había que enfrentarse a una realidad intermedia entre los extremos de Fuerza Nueva y de Triunfo. Y lo recuerdo porque aquel domingo, no sé si llevados por la morbosidad o inspirados por la providencia, una amiga y yo decidimos comprarnos Fuerza Nueva. La leímos clandestinamente y en clave de humor negro y, cuando nos despedimos, yo me fui hacia casa con la revista enrollada en la mano.

Al llegar a la altura de Francisco Silvela, vi bajar por la avenida de América el cortijo fúnebre de dos de los policías asesinados días atrás.

Abriendo la marcha, una confusa muchedumbre venía cantando el Cara al sol y gratando consignas. Fascinado por la violencia, me detuve a mirar en la acera. Una mujer con camisa y boina falangistas se descolgó del grupo y se encaró con los curiosos. Nos reprochaba, al parecer, nuestra pasividad. Pero de pronto la ira de la mujer se concentró en un joven con barba situado a mi lado. “¿Y tú por qué no cantas, cabrón barbudo?”, le arguyó muy cerca de la cara. Luego todo fue muy rápido. Media docena de tipos atléticos que venían detrás con la mano alzada hicieron causa con la mujer y, sin preguntar, se lanzaron sobre el joven. En la confusión de los golpes y de las blasfemias, alguien me señaló y gritó: “Ése iba con el barbas!”. En un instante me inmovilizaron los brazos y las piernas, me tumbaron en el suelo y, antes del primer golpe, uno dijo: “Vamos a ver qué lee este hijo de puta”.

Todavía ahora sigo pensando que aquella revista tenía que haber sido Triunfo, y que sólo una casualidad apenas verosímil hizo posible una escena aún más estrafalaria. Mientras me abrazaban y me llamaban camarada, intercedí por el joven de la barba. “Ése es de los nuestros”, les dije. Me quedé mirando confidencialmente su cara paralizada en un gesto estúpido de asombro hasta que, llevado casi en volandas, me encontré en mitad de la calle con la mano en alto y balbuceando el Cara al sol.
