La anexión de Crimea a Rusia ha puesto en alerta a los países bálticos y del Este.
Temen que Putin repita la misma maniobra en otros territorios. Por eso, miran con recelo a un estratégico enclave ruso, situado entre Polonia y Lituania. Kaliningrado alberga la flota soviética del Báltico, tiene dos bases aéreas soviéticas y desde 2012 cuenta con misiles balísticos de corto alcance. Este territorio perteneció a Alemania y fue anexionado a Rusia tras la Guerra Fría. Pero muchos de sus habitantes nunca se sintieron soviéticos y siempre han mirado esperanzados a Occidente. Informe Semanal viajó hasta allí hace diez años para conocer de cerca este pedazo de Rusia en medio de la Europa Comunitaria.

Fue levantado en el más estricto secreto, en una sola noche, la madrugada del 13 de agosto de 1961. Fueron necesarios cerca de 50mil operarios para levantar un muro de hormigón, ladrillos y alambrada de espino. 155 kilómetros de verguenza de torres de control, focos, vigilantes con perros y una zona de seguridad: la franja de la muerte patrullada las 24 horas para evitar la fuga de ciudadanos de la Alemania del Este, tomada por la URSS, a la República Federal al lado, capitalista. Esa mañana los berlineses vieron con incredulidad y asombro primero, con ira y desgarro después como su vida quedaba resquebrajada en dos. 79 personas fueron abatidas, más de 100 resultaron heridas. 40mil lograron huir de la RDA convertida en prisión. Sin embargo el gérmen de la democracia había prendido. La presión popular hizo saltar finalmente por los aires aquella barrera de odio, aquél telón de acero. Era 9 de noviembre de 1989. Informe Semanal fue testigo excepcional de la apertura de unas puertas que nunca debieron haberse cerrado, que nunca debieron existir. Esa noche, el pueblo alemán, cuentan las crónicas, fue el pueblo más feliz del mundo.

Sí hay un país en Europa que sabe gestionar las crisis y reinventarse periódicamente es Alemania. Actualmente es el líder de Europa, cuando hace unos 20 años estaba dividido en dos mitades desde 1949: eran la República Federal de Alemania y la República Democrática de Alemania. Nos centraremos en el país que ya ha desaparecido, la RDA. ¿Cómo era aquel país socialista, oculto largos años tras un muro, con el que, sin embargo, la España de Franco estableció relaciones diplomáticas ya en 1973? Coloquio entre Alonso Álvarez de Toledo, ex embajador de España en la RDA entre 1986 y 1990; y José María Faraldo, escritor y profesor de Historia en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

El último Embajador de España ante la República Democrática Alemana (RDA), entre 1985 y 1990, vivió la descomposición de los regímenes satélites de la URSS y el día a día del Berlín Oriental, una ciudad que define como "fría y gris", en la que lidió con un régimen poco accesible y fue objeto de espionaje de la Stasi a través de todas las personas que había a su alrededor, incluídos la cocinera y el conductor de la embajada.
Junto al equipo de Informe Semanal de Rosa María Artal, vivió en directo la apertura del Muro de Berlín el 9 de noviembre de 1989, una medida adoptada para impedir que escaparan por Checoslovaquia quienes pretendían abandonar el estalinismo de la RDA y que puso fin a las tres décadas que permaneció Alemania dividida.
