La obra fue llamada también Amnistía y fue tomada entonces como símbolo de la lucha por lograr que el Gobierno decretara la libertad de los presos políticos del régimen de Franco. Fuentes del Ministerio de Cultura destacaron la importancia de la obra de Genovés al adquirirlo en 1979, indicando que esa significación «no reside únicamente en su calidad artística y en su planteamiento conceptual; El abrazo supone, además, el símbolo de nuestra transición hacia la democracia y el ferviente anhelo de la definitiva reconciliación entre las que Antonio Machado denominó «las dos Españas». Cuando El abrazo se convirtió en Amnistía fue por una iniciativa de la Junta Democrática, que se planteaba la salida de los presos políticos como un paso previo a la reconciliación de Las Españas que ahora evoca el Ministerio de Cultura.
