"China, la década tormentosa" es un documental dividido en 4 episodios de 50 minutos cada uno en los que se trata sobre los años de la Revolución Cultural en China.
Episodio 1: El nacimiento de la guardia roja.
Una multitud congregada en la plaza Tiananmen grita: "¡Viva Mao Zedong!". Este hecho, seguido en todo el mundo, proclamaba el inicio de la Revolución Cultural en China. El fracaso de "Gran Salto hacia Adelante", empezado diez años atrás, había sumido a China en una hambruna sin precedentes; había parado la producción industrial de todo el país e incluso había apartado a Mao de la vida pública. Pero las reformas económicas prometidas por Liu Shaogi y la nueva libertad que prometió el movimiento de "Las cien escuelas del pensamiento" trajeron a la gente una nueva esperanza. Sin embargo, los mensajes escritos en las paredes de las universidades de Beijing (Pekín) presagiaron otro gran cambio: el nacimiento de la Guardia Roja y de la "Revolución Cultural".
Episodio 2: Justificando la rebelión.
Con gritos de "Destrozad a los cuatro viejos" y "La rebelión está justificada", la Guardia Roja, por orden de Mao, empezó a destrozar activos culturales, a derrumbar a líderes de organizaciones y terminó denunciando a algunas de las figuras más importantes del país. Con el desarrollo de la Revolución Cultural, el tumulto se intensificó y la lucha entre los revolucionarios se convirtió en una lucha armada. La confusión llegó a las fábricas, escuelas y oficinas de toda China. Detectando el peligro, Mao prescindió de los radicales y reconstruyó el Partido Comunista Chino, pero durante este período el miedo ya había dejado enormes cicatrices psicológicas en las personas.
Episodio 3: El movimiento de los jóvenes al campo.
La Revolución Cultural no sólo afectó a las ciudades, sino también a la producción agrícola. Mao envió a los jóvenes de La Guardia Roja a trabajar en el campo para "aprender de los granjeros", pero la realidad que encontraron allí fue demasiado severa y estos jóvenes intelectuales se sintieron engañados. Para poner fin a la Revolución Cultural, Mao nombró a Lin Biao como sucesor, pero éste se vió implicado en un golpe de estado que fracasó, y terminó estrellándose cuando intentaba huir en avión. Quitaron la foto de Lin Biao del "Pequeño Libro Rojo de Mao", pero pronto los jóvenes comenzaron a dudar sobre el "éxito" de la Revolución Cultural.
Episodio 4: Reforma y apertura.
Con el declive del poder de Mao, "La Banda de los Cuatro" entró en una lucha con Zhou Elai por el poder. Sin embargo, la repentina muerte de Zhou conmocionó a la gente y dos millones de personas llenaron la Plaza de Tiananmen para llorar su fallecimiento. Al mismo tiempo, las críticas hacia "La Banda de los Cuatro" estaban cada vez más presentes, y los chinos decidieron que ya había visto demasiado cuando la banda organizó la purga del sucesor de Mao, Deng Xiaoping. Un mes después de la muerte de Mao, se acabó La Revolución Cultural con la detención de la banda. Volvió Deng Xiaoping al poder y recomendó "reformas y apertura" en el país, empezando así un nuevo capítulo en la Historia de China.
