El Pent&aacute;gono se limit&oacute; a comentar que segu&iacute;a de cerca los acontecimientos en ese peque&ntilde;o y estrat&eacute;gico pa&iacute;s, situado en el punto neur&aacute;lgico de las mayores reservas de petr&oacute;leo del mundo.</p>\r\n<p>La crisis del reino es una prueba may&uacute;scula sobre la sinceridad de la pol&iacute;tica norteamericana en la regi&oacute;n. Aunque no tiene el significado hist&oacute;rico ni el peso pol&iacute;tico de Egipto, Bahr&eacute;in es un pilar para la protecci&oacute;n de la seguridad en Oriente Pr&oacute;ximo y de los intereses de EE UU en la zona.</p>\r\n<p>Adem&aacute;s de ser el albergue de la V Flota norteamericana que vigila el Golfo y el estrecho de Ormuz, la concentraci&oacute;n militar en Bahr&eacute;in, donde se re&uacute;nen varias fuerzas navales que patrullan el &Iacute;ndico, con submarinos y portaaviones incluidos, ha sido decisiva en las dos guerras contra Irak y ser&iacute;a vital ahora en el caso de una confrontaci&oacute;n con Ir&aacute;n.</p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.elpais.com/articulo/internacional/Cable/entrevista/general/Petraeus/rey/Hamad/Bahrein/elpepuint/20101128elpepuint_29/Tes\" target=\"_blank\">Como demostraron los documentos del Departamento de Estado obtenidos por Wikileaks, Bahr&eacute;in es el punto central en el seguimiento de la situaci&oacute;n pol&iacute;tica en el vecino r&eacute;gimen isl&aacute;mico</a>. Esos papeles pusieron tambi&eacute;n en evidencia otra condici&oacute;n esencial de ese peque&ntilde;o reino: la lealtad de su casa real. Ha sido el rey de Bahr&eacute;in quien con m&aacute;s &eacute;nfasis ha defendido en los &uacute;ltimos a&ntilde;os la necesidad de acabar con el programa nuclear iran&iacute;, aunque sea mediante el uso de la fuerza.</p>\r\n<p>Para Washington, adem&aacute;s, Bahr&eacute;in, donde la familia dirigente conduce un r&eacute;gimen autocr&aacute;tico blando que se ha permitido en el pasado una cierta apertura democr&aacute;tica, era un ejemplo de c&oacute;mo se pod&iacute;a liberalizar Oriente Pr&oacute;ximo. En diciembre de 2010, durante una visita a Manama, Hillary Clinton se manifest&oacute; \"impresionada por el compromiso que el Gobierno de Bahr&eacute;in tiene con la v&iacute;a democr&aacute;tica\".</p>\r\n<p>Ese aperturismo suena hoy raqu&iacute;tico ante los nuevos est&aacute;ndares democr&aacute;ticos marcados por Egipto y reclamados ya por la poblaci&oacute;n del reino, entre otros muchos pa&iacute;ses &aacute;rabes. EE UU se ve por tanto ante el reto de apoyar las protestas con riesgo de desestabilizar el r&eacute;gimen que da acogida a su fuerza militar en el Golfo o respaldar a ese r&eacute;gimen y convertir en papel mojado todas las promesas de democracia hechas por Obama en los &uacute;ltimos d&iacute;as.</p>\r\n<p>Esto &uacute;ltimo es inconcebible.&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.elpais.com/articulo/internacional/hora/doctrina/Obama/elpepiint/20110213elpepiint_6/Tes\" target=\"_blank\">Obama est&aacute; condenado a aplicar su propia doctrina en Oriente Pr&oacute;ximo</a>. Si lo que es verdad para Egipto tiene que ser verdad en Ir&aacute;n, como dijo el martes, tambi&eacute;n tiene que ser verdad en Bahr&eacute;in, en Jordania y qui&eacute;n sabe si alg&uacute;n d&iacute;a en Arabia Saud&iacute;.</p>\r\n<p>De momento, Washington est&aacute; manejando este punto de la crisis con especial prudencia.&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.elpais.com/articulo/internacional/Casa/Blanca/exige/regimen/egipcio/transicion/ordenada/democracia/elpepuint/20110130elpepuint_11/Tes\" target=\"_blank\">El portavoz de la Casa Blanca se neg&oacute; ayer a repetir para Bahr&eacute;in el llamamiento a una transici&oacute;n pac&iacute;fica que se hizo para Egipto</a>. El r&eacute;gimen de Bahr&eacute;in, seg&uacute;n los expertos, parece tener m&aacute;s flexibilidad que Hosni Mubarak para una evoluci&oacute;n democr&aacute;tica sin ruptura.
