Islam Karimov, para muchos uno de los &uacute;ltimos herederos directos de los restos de la Uni&oacute;n Sovi&eacute;tica, falleci&oacute; el viernes a los 78 a&ntilde;os.</p>\r\n<p>El gobierno uzbeco finalmente confirm&oacute; su muerte luego de numerosos rumores, y seis d&iacute;as despu&eacute;s de que Karimov fuera hospitalizado por lo que se cree fue una hemorragia cerebral.</p>\r\n<p>Diversos reportes desde una de las naciones m&aacute;s herm&eacute;ticas del planeta se&ntilde;alan que han comenzado las preparaciones para el funeral que tendr&iacute;a ligar este s&aacute;bado.</p>\r\n<p>Karimov lleg&oacute; al poder inmediatamente despu&eacute;s del colapso de la URSS y de la independencia de Uzbekist&aacute;n. Hasta la fecha hab&iacute;a sido su primer y &uacute;nico presidente.</p>\r\n<p>Su mandato de m&aacute;s de un cuarto de siglo estuvo salpicado de duras&nbsp;<strong>acusaciones de violencia estatal, manipulaci&oacute;n electoral y por un esc&aacute;ndalo que llev&oacute; a la ca&iacute;da en desgracia de su propia hija.</strong></p>\r\n<p>Karimov naci&oacute; en 1938 en Samarcanda, una de las ciudades m&aacute;s antiguas de Asia Central y punto clave de la m&iacute;tica Ruta de la Seda. Se educ&oacute; en un orfanato antes de estudiar Ingenier&iacute;a y Econom&iacute;a en la universidad.</p>\r\n<p>Durante los a&ntilde;os siguientes inici&oacute; el ascenso en los rangos del Partido Comunista de Uzbekist&aacute;n, del que se convirti&oacute; en primer secretario en 1989, en un momento en que la fragilidad de la URSS empezaba a ser evidente.</p>\r\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Uzbequist&aacute;n en un vistazo</h2>\r\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\r\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>Poblaci&oacute;n</strong>: 29 millones.</li>\r\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>Religi&oacute;n</strong><strong>:</strong>&nbsp;cerca del 90% de la poblaci&oacute;n se declara musulmana. La mayor minor&iacute;a es cristiana ortodoxa rusa.</li>\r\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>Etnicidad</strong>: m&aacute;s del 80% de los habitantes son uzbecos. Tambi&eacute;n hay un 5% de rusos, tayicos, kazajos y t&aacute;rtaros.</li>\r\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>Econom&iacute;a</strong>: tiene un PIB de US$66.733 millones seg&uacute;n el Banco Mundial, que lo sit&uacute;a en el puesto 70 en el mundo.</li>\r\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><strong>Principales industrias</strong><strong>:&nbsp;</strong>algod&oacute;n, oro, energ&iacute;a, productos qu&iacute;micos.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<p>En 1991, Karimov declar&oacute; la independencia de Uzbekist&aacute;n y gan&oacute; las primeras elecciones presidenciales por un amplio margen, en unos comicios que fueron calificados de&nbsp;<strong>\"gravemente ama&ntilde;ados\"</strong>&nbsp;por la organizaci&oacute;n no gubernemental&nbsp;<em>Human Rights Watch</em>.</p>\r\n<p>Ese proceso se repiti&oacute; con similares resultados a lo largo de20 a&ntilde;os. En las elecciones del a&ntilde;o pasado, fue reelegido con un 90% de los sufragios.</p>\r\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Persecuci&oacute;n de los islamistas</h2>\r\n<p>El monopolio casi total del poder por parte de Karimov estuvo acompa&ntilde;ado de la represi&oacute;n del disenso.</p>\r\n<p>Pol&iacute;ticos opositores y activistas de derechos humanos fueron encarcelados o expulsados del pa&iacute;s.
