¿Por qué pagaría alguien 28 dólares por un billete de 20? Este es sólo uno de los experimentos que pueden verse en el documental El poder del dinero y que se han llevado a cabo en algunas de las más prestigiosas universidades norteamericanas.
Un grupo de científicos creen saber la respuesta a esta inexplicable conducta. Afirman que cuando se trata de tomar decisiones relacionadas con el dinero, la mente se comporta de forma irracional.
¿Desmontando a Adam Smith?
Hasta el desplome de 2008, la teoría del pensamiento económico racional había sido la predominante en las últimas tres décadas.
Los economistas racionales creen que el individuo calcula siempre el riesgo que conlleva gastar más de lo ahorrado. Exactamente lo que propugna Adam Smith, el padre de la racionalidad económica, para quien este comportamiento constituye una mano invisible, que mantiene estable la economía mundial.
El poder del dinero demuestra, a través de varios experimentos científicos, que la conducta de la gente cuando hay dinero por medio cuestiona la filosofía económica dominante, basada en la estabilidad de los mercados y que ha concluido con el estallido de la burbuja inmobiliaria.
Drogas, comida, sexo y dinero...
Psicólogos de la universidad norteamericana de Stanford han detectado en varios ensayos, que al mencionar el dinero, se activan los mismos circuitos cerebrales de las emociones, que cuando se nos habla de drogas, comida o sexo.
¿Es posible que el hecho de que se active una zona de nuestro cerebro a causa del dinero explique algunos de los frenéticos comportamientos de los agentes financieros y de los consumidores durante el boom inmobiliario?¿Somos racionales en lo referente al dinero o los sentimientos siguen moviendo los mercados?
