Los acontecimientos que han tenido lugar en enero y febrero en Túnez y Egipto han sido seguidos con interés desde Marruecos, si bien con inquietud desde determinados sectores del país. Mientras la prensa marroquí saludaba la caída de los dictadores y algunas organizaciones cívicas se acercaban en directo a los acontecimientos para expresar su solidaridad, las autoridades se movían con cautela para evitar concentraciones de apoyo a las revoluciones en curso que pudieran desestabilizar el país. Recientemente, el país se ha visto sumido en una oleada de protestas que ha cambiado de signo la apatía política de la población y ha obligado a todas las fuerzas políticas a apuntarse al discurso de la aceleración de las reformas.

Information about rights held in and over the resource
El escenario económico norteafricano se ha visto profundamente alterado
durante 2011. A diferencia de lo ocurrido en otros países, en Marruecos el crecimiento se
ha visto afectado de manera relativamente menor pese a la fragilización de los equilibrios
macroeconómicos. Para poder posicionarse favorablemente en el nuevo contexto
regional, el país debe acelerar las reformas económicas e institucionales y consolidarlas
endógenamente. La UE también debería acompañar e incentivar esas reformas con una
visión estratégica a largo plazo, replanteándose los obstáculos a la integración de
Marruecos en el mercado europeo. El nuevo posicionamiento de Marruecos no puede
producirse sólo por defecto, debido a los problemas de sus vecinos norteafricanos, sino
también por méritos propios. España y Marruecos deben valorar este nuevo horizonte
estratégico y reconsiderar las trabas al aprovechamiento de las complementariedades
productivas entre ambos países.

Primero fue la sociedad tunecina la que salió a la calle a principios de 2011 para pedir la marcha del presidente y de su régimen. Incapaz de imponer su ley y orden tras pocas semanas de revueltas, Zine el Abidín Ben Ali se vio forzado a huir del país el 14 de enero. Unos días más tarde, las protestas sociales llegaron a Egipto. Millones de personas piden en las calles la salida de Mohamed Hosni Mubarak del poder. La crisis de liderazgo se extiende por los países árabes como muestra del divorcio entre una sociedad hastiada y un modelo de Estado que no ofrece ni oportunidades ni libertad a sus ciudadanos.
