Se asoció con trabajadores y sindicalistas del movimiento Solidaridad en la fábrica de acero de Varsovia. Acérrimo anticomunista, en sus sermones unía exhortaciones espirituales con mensajes políticos que criticaban el sistema comunista y motivaban a las personas a protestar. Durante la ley marcial, la Iglesia Católica fue la única fuerza que tenía una voz de protesta abierta, con la celebración regular de misas que presentaban oportunidades para las reuniones públicas en las iglesias. Sus sermones eran normalmente transmitidos por Radio Free Europe, con lo que se hizo famoso en toda Polonia por su postura intransigente contra el régimen. La S?u?ba Bezpiecze?stwa (policía secreta) trató de silenciarlo o intimidarlo, pero como estas técnicas no funcionaron, se inventaron una evidencia contra él. Y así, fue arrestado en 1983, pero fue pronto liberado por la intervención del clero y perdonado por una amnistía. Para asesinarlo, se escenificó un accidente automovilístico el 13 de octubre de 1984, pero logró escapar con vida. El plan alternativo era secuestrarlo, lo que se hizo el 19 de octubre de 1984. El sacerdote fue golpeado y asesinado por tres oficiales de la policía de seguridad. Luego, su cuerpo fue lanzado al interior del río Vístula, desde donde fue recuperado el 30 de octubre de 1984. Las noticias del asesinato político causaron una conmoción en toda Polonia y los asesinos y uno de sus superiores fueron condenados por el crimen. Más de 250.000 personas asistieron al funeral del sacerdote, incluyendo a Lech Wa??sa, el 3 de noviembre de 1984.
