Durante la Guerra Fría los países debieron alinearse a dos bloques antagónicos: el capitalismo liderado por EEUU y el socialismo liderado por la ex URSS. <p><span>Se trata de una novela histórica en la que el autor, Dai Sijie, relata su propia historia personal vivida en los tiempos de la "Reeducación" implantada durante la Revolución Cultural por Mao Zedong. El libro cuenta la historia de dos adolescentes chinos, Lou y su compañero Ma (quien hace de narrador), que a finales de los años sesenta son enviados a una aldea perdida en las montañas del Fénix del Cielo, cerca de la frontera con el Tíbet, primeramente dedicada al cultivo del opio, y posteriormente al arroz, para cumplir con el proceso de reeducación implantado por Mao Zedong. Sus condiciones de vida son casi infrahumanas, y apenas mantienen viva la esperanza de poder regresar algún día a su ciudad natal. Sin embargo, todo cambia cuando conocen a otro joven que ha logrado ocultar una maleta llena de obras emblemáticas de la literatura occidental. Los dos jóvenes descubrirán, gracias a la lectura de Balzac , Dumas , Stendhal o Romain Roland , un nuevo mundo más allá de los valores impuestos por la Revolución Cultural, que les valdrá además para conseguir favores del jefe de la aldea y conquistar a una joven costurera de la aldea vecina.</span></p>
